Sound Design & Cultural Heritage

FARB 2023 - 2025

The “Sound Design and Cultural Heritage” project aims to codify the role of sound design in the field of Cultural Heritage (especially in terms of interaction design and exhibition design) by focusing on sound design understood both as content and as a narrative tool.

In particular, this research aims to explore the role of sound and sound design in the Italian and international cultural context, with the intention of imagining new models of immersive sound-based cultural experiences that re-engage visitors in cultural institutions in a post-pandemic era.

Indeed, sound design emerges as a branch of design not yet adequately addressed by the discipline and academia, despite the fact that sound is increasingly emerging as a theme and design tool for cultural heritage in the age of digital transformation.

At the same time, it is widely embraced and applied by professionals, especially in the cultural context, and witnessed by several design interventions that interpret sound as a crucial element for the whole project.

The research moves from this detachment between the scientific community and the professional practice and articulates one general objective (GO) and four specific objectives (SO) to fill the gap.

  1. To envision new models of immersive cultural experiences based on sound, engaging visitors back to cultural institutions in a post-pandemic era.

-SO1. To define the state of the art of sound design in the cultural realm, reading, codifying, and framing current design experiences.

-SO2. To understand the approaches, the practices, and the tools the designers embrace to “use” the sound as a design material in the cultural context.

-SO3. To envision virtuous models of collaboration between the scientific community (codified and Scientific knowledge), Cultural and Creative Industries (exhibition designers, sound designers, and media producers), and cultural institutions.

-SO4. To build an international network/hub that collects researchers, CCIs, and cultural institutions around the topic.
